Artist’s
Statement:
I have come to the belief that the years spent working
as a surgical artist as well as teaching the subject have provided
me with an extremely useful background. However, after years of
precisely portraying surgical anatomy for limited color production,
I now enjoy creating full-sized figurative paintings and working
with a live model. I think pastels are particularly colorful
and allow me to loosen up due to the limitations of the medium.
They are much easier for me than oils, but with the later, I’m
thoroughly enjoying the challenge. Plein-air landscape painting
takes place when I’m traveling and recently I’ve been
dabbling with watercolor and gouache, and this too screams for
more attention. Now that I have the time to focus on my fine art,
after years of 'red for the arteries, and blue for the veins',
I’m curious where the path will take me.
My fine artwork has
appeared in The Artist’s Magazine, The Pastel Journal,
International Artist and The Best of Portraiture. My two video’s “Steps
to a Likeness-Pastel’ and “Steps to a Likeness-Oil” were
featured in the 2005 Summer issue of the North Light Book Club
following an excellent review in the Pastel Journal. I have led
workshops nationally and in several locations in Tuscany, Italy.
